Activities to Do With Seniors This Labor Day

Labor Day: A National Holiday

When you have activities to do with seniors this Labor Day that are senior-friendly, you make your senior loved one feel included and joyful. And, when was the last time that we just stopped and thought about what Labor Day really means? Why do we celebrate the day? Why is it so important to us, as Americans? Let’s learn and think about this when we celebrate with our entire family, including our aging parents.

Labor Day recognizes the contributions and achievements made by our workers. Celebrated on the first Monday of September each year, it creates a three-day weekend signaling the unofficial end of summer. So, this break provides the perfect space to relax, celebrate, and spend time with your senior loved ones.

4  Senior-Friendly Labor Day Activities

There is not one specific way that Labor Day should be spent. Indeed, there are many different activities that you can do to make the most of your Labor Day weekend with your senior loved ones. Ideas from Relevar:

  1. Craft paper American flags. Crafting is often a very relaxing and worthwhile activity for seniors. Create American flags out of paper with your loved ones to show off your patriotic spirit!
  2. Bake a red, white, and blue cake. Nothing says quality time like baking together! This Labor Day, consider baking a red, white, and blue cake with your senior loved one. Follow a recipe or come up with your own take. The important thing is that you are spending quality time with your senior loved ones (and that the cake tastes delicious).
  3. Host a barbecue or picnic. Another way to celebrate Labor Day is by hosting an outdoor barbecue or picnic. Both are great senior-friendly activities that can bring the whole family together. Having your senior loved one help with the cooking can help them feel even more involved, if they’re up to it. Or, even watching you make their time-honored traditional recipes from a seat in the kitchen can bring them joy.
  4. Listen to Music. Music can transcend generations. This Labor Day, consider playing some throwbacks like Bob Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited” or Springsteen’s “Working on the Highway” that your senior loved ones can sing along to!

Make the Most of Labor Day 2025

No matter how crazy the Labor Day sales are, it is important to remember that the reason we celebrate the day is to honor our workers and their accomplishments. Some of the hardest workers were our seniors, so spending the day with them is a wonderful way to show our appreciation and care.

Let’s honor the people who made Labor Day possible!
