March is quickly approaching and is it Brain Injury Awareness month. At Relevar Home Care a majority of our clients have brain injuries and we want to help raise awareness.
Brain injuries are also known as traumatic brain injuries or craniocerebral trauma. You can also get an acquired brain injury which is an injury to the brain but not necessarily with trauma. Brain injuries are a dysfunction caused by an outside force, usually a violent blow to the head. Most often it occurs as a result of a severe sports injury or a car accident. Symptoms can be delayed or immediate and it can include: confusion, blurry vision, and concentration difficulty. There can be surgery, medication or even rest as a treatment option.

- Every 9 seconds, someone in the United States sustains a brain injury
- More than 3.5 million children and adults sustain a brain injury each year
- Typical causes of an acquired brain injury include:
- Electric shock
- Infectious disease
- Lightning strike
- Stroke
- Seizure disorder
- Substance abuse/overdose
- Tumor
- Toxic exposure
- One of every 60 people in the US lives with a TBI related disability
- At least 2.5 million people sustain a TBI
- 2 million are treated for TBI in emergency departments or trauma centers
- 280,000 are hospitalized
- 50,000 die
- Every day, 137 people die in the United States because of a TBI related injury
- At least 5.3 million Americans live with a TBI related disability
- The leading causes of TBI are:
- Assaults, 10.7%
- Motor vehicle traffic, 3%
- Struck by/against, 15.5%
- Unknown/other, 19.0%
- Falls, 40.5%
